Recently a friend of mine found out she was being laid off from her job. It was not a huge surprise yet it filled her days and nights with tension and uncertainty.
As we talked I asked what her plan was to find her next job. She went silent and then softly said, "I'm not sure." I started asking questions to get her to think about what she needed to be doing. As the conversation continued we outlined a number of action items she needed to do immediately.
One of the items was to tell everyone she knew what was going on and that she would get back to them with specifics on how they could help. We agreed she should not just call everyone but as she talked or saw people she would update them. She also updated her Facebook page to get the word out quicker.
During her weekly soccer game she mentioned her situation to one of her teammates. After the game her teammate asked her more about the type of job she was looking for and finally told her that her sister-in-law was looking for someone and she would call that evening to see if they were still looking.
A couple of days later she called, connected the two and an interview was set up. After an hour and half she was offered the job. The new job paid more, had better benefits and was better work. Her starting date ended up being the very day of her layoff.
Even though these weeks were stress filled it has turned out to be a great change for her.
